This is the reason why humans dare to neglect prayers.

My dear friends, prayer takes only 10 minutes of your time, but it is not an easy task. You need to focus and understand the recitation. In addition to that, is to self-control from deviation. Performing the 5 prayers daily is mandatory for all Muslims from the east to the west. Whereas neglecting prayers or deliberately delaying the prayer until the prayer is out of time is definitely a big sin.

Not surprisingly, many Muslims work and toiled from sunrise to sunset. The question is, why would they do that? Because they know that life needs to eat, eating needs money, and money is only earned if it works

Because they know the priority of working hard, so they do. Therefore, in this short writing, we will present a discussion of the priority of the five-time prayers and the law of abandoning it..

Hopefully, this small article will motivate the Muslims to always pay attention to this glorious pillar of Islam.

The Law of deliberately neglecting prayers

It is important to note that scholars have agreed (read: ijma’) that the sin for neglecting the five  obligatory prayers are greater than any other great sin. Ibn Qayyim Al Jauziyah -rahimahullah- said,

“Muslims agreed that neglecting prayers five times on purpose is the greatest sin and the sin is greater than the sin of killing, seizing the property of others, committing adultery, stealing, and drinking liquor. Those who neglected prayers will receive the punishment and wrath of Allah and the disgrace of this world and the Hereafter.” [Ash Sholah wa Hukmu Tarikiha, Syamsuddin Abu Abdillah Muhammad bin Abu Bakr bin Qayyim Al Jauziyah, page. 7, Darul Imam Ahmad, Kairo-Mesir.]

Reasons for neglecting prayers

As for the various cases of people neglecting prayers, we can detail as follows:

The first case: neglecting prayers by disobeying its obligations as it may be the word of some people, [If you want to pray, it is possible, it’s okay either. If this is done in order to disobey the obligatory law of prayers, such a person is punished by infidelity without any disagreement among scholars.

The second case: Neglecting prayers by assuming it is trivial and never executing it.  Even when asked to carry it out, even refused. So, this kind of person happens the hadiths of the Prophet shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam which shows the infidelity of the one who neglected prayers.

This is the opinion of Imam Ahmad, Ishaq, the majority of salaf scholars from the companions and tabi’in. An example of the hadith on this issue is the saying of the Prophet shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam, “The agreement between us and them (the unbelievers) is shalat. Whoever leaves him, then he is disbelieved.” [HR. Ahmad, Tirmidzi, An Nasa’i, Ibnu Majah. Said to be shohih by Syaikh Al Albani. Look Misykatul Mashobih no. 574]

The third case: No commitment routine in performing prayers with that said, the person sometimes perform prayer and sometimes neglected prayers. So, he was still punished by Muslims zhohir (who saw him) and did not disbelieve.

This is the opinion of Ishaq bin Rohuwyah that he should be gentle towards this kind of person until he returns to the right path. Wal ‘ibroh bilkhotimah [The sentence for him is seen from the state of the end of his life]. [Observe the explanation of Syaikhul Islam Ibnu Taimiyah in Majmu’ Al Fatawa, 7/617, Darul Wafa’.]

The fourth case: Neglecting Prayers and not knowing that neglecting the prayers makes him an infidel. So, the law for such a person as ignorant. This person is not discredited due to ignorance in himself which is judged as a deterrent factor in obtaining punishment.

Fifth case: He performs the prayer until it’s time out. He’s always been routine in carrying it out, but his prayers are often out of the prayer time. So, this kind of person is not a disbeliever, but he is sinful, and it is reprehensible as Allah says,

فَوَيۡلٞ لِّلۡمُصَلِّينَ ٤ ٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ عَن صَلَاتِهِمۡ سَاهُونَ ٥

It is wrong for those who are shalat, those who are negligent from their shalat.” (QS. Al Maa’un [107] : 4-5) [Observe the debate in this case in Al Manhajus Salafi ‘inda Syaikh Nashiruddin Al Albani, Syaikh Abdul Mun’im Salim, page. 189-190.]

Precious advice: Don’t ever neglect Your prayers!

Amirul Mukminin, Umar bin Al Khoththob -radhiyallahu ‘anhu- said, “Indeed, one of the most important things for you is prayers. Whoever keeps the prayers, means he has guarded religion. Whoever confiscates it, then for other deeds will be more squandered. There is no part in Islam, for those who neglect prayers.”

Imam Ahmad -rahimahullah- also said a similar tone, “Everyone who belittles the matter of prayer, means has disparaged religion. A man has a share in Islam comparable to his guard against the five-time prayers. A person who is said to be passionate in Islam is a person who really pays attention to the five-time prayers.
